Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlarged Prostate) – Treatment /Drugs

Enlarged prostate is a condition in which the prostate cells grow in size.

Benign growth of prostate cells is not cancer.

The prostate cells in the gland grows in size.

It increases pressure on the bladder.

It blocks the urine flow.

It affects 50% of men by the age of 60.

90% of men over 85 years of age tend to develop an enlarged prostate.

Benign cells do not travel to other parts of the body.

Cancer is related to abnormal cell growth.

Cancerous cells rapidly spread to other parts.

What are the drugs used in BPH? 

Alpha blockers – They relax the smooth muscles.

They facilitate urine flow.

Tamsulosin and Silodosin

5-alpha-reductase inhibitors – These drugs shrink the prostate cells.

They inhibit dihydrotestosterone hormone expression.

This reduces prostate cell formation.

Dutasteride and Finasteride

PDE-5 inhibitors – These relax the bladder and the urinary tract muscles.

These help manage BPH symptoms.

Tadalafil

Anticholinergics – 

With the growing prostate, the bladder muscles become overactive.

It leads to a sudden increase in urge.

It also causes urine incontinence.

Anticholinergic trigger involuntary contractions.
