What is Eltrombo?

Eltrombo is used as an adjuvant to chemotherapy or other chronic treatments, in which the platelet count falls severely.

Uses of Eltrombo

It is used as a supportive treatment in:

  • • Chronic HCV infections
  • • Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)
  • • Bone Marrow suppression causing severe aplastic anemia

How does Eltrombo work?

Eltrombopag activates the platelet-producing receptor, increasing the platelet count.

Contraindications

Not to be used in patients

  • • Hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the drug or its excipients
  • • Breastfeeding mothers
  • • Pregnant women

Precautions

To be used cautiously in patients with:

  • • Liver dysfunction or cirrhosis
  • • In Cardiac patients, it may increase the risk of stroke, thromboembolic events
  • • Renal impaired functions
  • • Hematological disorders

Warnings

  • • Prescription drug to be used under medical supervision.
  • • Not recommended in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

Important Safety and Monitoring Information

  • • Monitor for Hepatotoxicity
  • • Liver function tests
  • • Regular CBC- platelet count
  • • Cardiac functions- thromboembolic events due to overproduction of platelets
