Know the Difference Between Advanced Cancer and Metastatic Cancer

What is Metastatic Cancer?

The cancer that spreads from the primary cancer site to different locations.

It is a process in which the cancer cells travel in the body.

The tumor cells spread through –

  • • Lymphatic system
  • • Blood vessels

The Types of Metastatic Cancer

Local Metastasis

It is the spread of cancer cells to the nearest region.

The cancer spreads to the neighboring –

  • • lymph nodes
  • • Tissues.

Regional Metastasis

The cancer has spread into the nearby region.

It occupies the same region.

The cancer has not spread beyond the region.

Distant Metastasis

It is the condition that cancer cells reach other organs.

It is the process that cancer has covered far-off regions.

The Process by Which Cancer Spreads

It is a complex process-

  • • The cancer cells are detached from the tumor.
  • • The cancer cells reach nearby tissues.
  • • The cancer cells travel into the blood vessels and the lymph system.
  • • They get attached to platelets or blood capillaries.
  • • The tumor cells reach distant organs.
  • • The tumor cells start growing into small masses.
  • • The small tumors develop new blood vessels.
  • • The small masses grow into large tumors.
  • • The tumor cells evade the immune system.

What is Advanced Cancer?

The advanced cancer is the cancer that has reached the last stage.

The cancer that cannot be cured. It is generally the 4th stage of the cancer.

It includes –

Metastasized Cancer –

The cancer that has spread from other parts.

The cancer cells often spread in the advanced stage.

The cancer has spread to organs and tissues that are distant.

It is the secondary tumor that has started growing in distant organs.

Locally Advanced Cancer –

It is the stage of cancer in which the cancer has grown into the neighboring tissue.

It is usually called stage 1 or stage 2 cancer.

Are Metastatic Cancers the Same Cancer?

The metastatic cancers are the same original cancer cells.

It is the same cells that spread to distant organs.

Examples of Metastatic Cancers –

1. The breast cancer that has spread to lung is metastasized breast cancer.

It is the breast cancer cells that have reached the liver.

2. If the lung cancer spreads to the brain. It is not brain cancer. It is the same lung cancer.

The Treatment Approach for Metastasized and Advanced Cancers

The treatment for advanced or metastatic cancer includes managing the chronic condition, extending survival years.

Treating cancer effects and improving quality of life.

It included systemic therapies-

  • • Chemotherapy – It is the use of toxic drugs. The drugs kill the cancer cells.
  • • Targeted therapy – It is the use of drugs that target cancer cells.
  • • Hormone therapy – It is the drugs used that inhibit hormone secretions. It is widely used for hormone-dependent cancers.
    Example – Breast cancer
    Prostate cancer
    Thyroid cancer
  • • Immunotherapy – It stimulates the immunity of body. It is the use of proteins or antibodies that attack the cancer cells.

Local therapies include –

  • • Radiation Therapy – It is the use of radioactive material. The rays from the isotopes are concentrated on the tumor to kill the viable cells.
  • • Surgery

Why is Palliative Cancer Treatment Important?

The palliative care includes –

  • • Managing the symptoms of cancer.
  • • Cancer treatment side effects.

It is the use of injectables, which are given alongside the cancer treatment.

Zoledronic Acid InjectionZoldokast
